Mr. Tierney was an award-winning producer and storyteller who was passionate about nurturing the next generation of Canadian filmmakers. He was best known as the producer of the award-winning Bon Cop, Bad Cop, one of the highest-grossing Canadian films, and the highest-grossing Québec-made film. A champion of Québec and Canadian culture, he was beloved in both the anglophone and francophone arts communities. Mr. Tierney also served as the Vice-Chair of the Canadian Academy, and was a former Chair of the Board of Cinémathèque Québécoise. His award is being presented posthumously after his untimely passing, as a tribute to his significant contributions to the Canadian film landscape.

Tierney était un producteur et un conteur primé qui soutenait avec passion les cinéastes de la relève. Il a produit Bon Cop, Bad Cop, l’un des plus grands succès en salles au Canada et le film québécois ayant encaissé les meilleures recettes au guichet. Défenseur de la culture du Québec et du Canada, il était aimé de tous au sein de la communauté artistique anglophone comme francophone. M. Tierney, également vice-président de l’Académie, a aussi présidé le conseil d’administration de la Cinémathèque québécoise. Son prix est remis à titre posthume en hommage à ses importantes contributions au paysage cinématographique du Canada.
